Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
A lot of people think of the their time on the toilet as a place of quite meditation and peaceful introspection. Other people choose to do amazing things: Martin Riggs defuses bombs… me? I read comics… They’re in the can!

Usually, I do this in three sections, presentation (art, which Cassiday excels at, truly), characters (also ‘mythos’ arguably my favorite part of comics) and experience (what I took away from this ‘unit’ or this part of the story).
However, this week really touches on something that is new to the can: digital comics. The DCU app hit us last week, and I simply can not put it down. I’ve read Planetary plenty of times, but there’s just something about being able to read it in my pocket whenever I want that has made me fall in love with this story all over again while getting swept off my feet by the digital age of comics.
Now my only real exposure to the Wildstorm imprint over the years was the Wildcats Saturday morning cartoon show, so when I picked up @slim’s copy of the first arc of Planetary years ago I had no idea what I was in for. Seemed to me that Wildstorm was just allowed to ‘be,’ to flesh out all those ideas and themes that DC just couldn’t do with its established titles.
And my love of great characters and an engrossing mythos was filled to the brim with every issue of Planetary. It was almost like a ‘Lost’ type story in comics form that asked about ten questions for every one that it answered, but in a super hero setting. In that regard, I wonder if Planetary even might have been on the lists of influences on ‘Lost,’ cause damn if I couldn’t draw some easy parallels. Hmmm… I might smell a new blog on that one. About everything I could tell you about Planetary beyond the premise would be a spoiler, so I encourage everyone to download the DC comics app, and pick up the first six issues. For 12 bucks, it’s a steal and a deal.
That brings me to digital comics in general. I can honestly say they’re ‘wooing’ me. I have a couple of titles that I get regularly on ComiXology (Stuff of Legend, and Incognito to name a couple), but bringing the big two to the iPhone is something that stands to rekindle the fire of comics into old readers like me, and I for one am excited. I can only wait for the day when you can get an issue the day it comes out. I think @slim eluded to that on nerdcast.org some time ago.
That brings me to my last point, I want to thank @slim and @dale_a, without their unwavering support, this blog might not have happened. Many thanks, gentlemen.
