Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
Ah, the old days when I thought I could cut it as a writer…
The book was called ‘The Inheritor’ and followed this basic pilot plot:
Jack Sullivan is a regular guy who’s regular life is falling apart all around him. After the death of his infant son and the impending divorce from his now estranged wife Jack has a mental break.
Suddenly Jack has living visions, strange memories of all the lives he has ever lived, every single reincarnation reaching back in to oblivion. The experience leaves him comatose for 21 days until he awakens, now seemingly fine and oblivious to his previous mental state.
It was all a melt down… or was it?
Jack has haunting dreams of a murder… his own but not quite, it’s a thirty five year old school teacher, but somehow he sees everything through this man’s eyes. Also, the world around him seems strange, as his long term memories have somehow changed.
Where before Jack could barely change a tire, he finds himself able to rebuild a 1972 Challenger, a car he is now is strangely drawn to, yet he has never trained as a mechanic.
Libraries are full of books he has already read, yet can’t remember where or when. He lapses into an old army workout routine, yet has never served. For some reason he now understands other languages if he can’t quite speak them fluently.
His dream intensifies every night of this man he never knew and his gruesome death. Finally unable to sleep, Jack leaves his home and walks down to the corner bar.
A beautiful woman sits across from him as he orders a drink. He stops suddenly and stares blankly at her. A fellow patron shakes his arm, ‘Hey, Sully, you ok?’
‘I think that woman is my daughter, and I think she might have murdered me…’
And after that, the story truly begins.
Man I thought that could have been a great pilot for a tv show, since the comic never worked out. Every once in a while I cast the show in my head.
